Meet the Team: IT Manager, David Grant
With nearly two decades of experience in HR leadership, David Grant wasn’t actively looking to make a career change—until the pandemic shifted his perspective. Now an HR Consultant at Insource, David brings a wealth of knowledge, a strong sense of purpose, and a genuine passion for people to his role. How did you find Insource?
I came across Insource on LinkedIn. Insource’s job posting for an HR Consultant stood out, and the way the team engaged with me from the very beginning gave me a strong feeling that this could be the right place.

How was the interview process?
It was almost three years ago now, but I still remember how positive the process was. I initially heard from one of Insource’s Recruiter’s, Jessica, after applying on LinkedIn, and we had a phone screening. Then I met Shavon and Karynn, who lead HR Teams 1 and 2.
What really impressed me was the communication. I always knew what to expect, who I’d be speaking to next, and when things would happen. That’s rare. At the time, I had two other opportunities progressing, but I knew in my heart that Insource was going to move the fastest—and most thoughtfully—because of how they treated me during the process.
I even had the chance to meet Saleha, Insource VP, and Bruce, Insource’s President,—which made me feel like the company truly invested in getting to know candidates at my level.

What were your main goals going in?
At first, I didn’t have specific goals—I just knew I wanted to learn and grow. But I quickly realized that becoming a consultant was going to require me to think and speak differently.
I’d spent years as an HR Director managing a team, so shifting to a full-service consulting model—where I was executing the work myself across multiple clients—was a big adjustment. I had to develop new rhythms and figure out how to deliver excellent work for each client, every day. Now, I mentor other consultants at Insource and share some of those early lessons.

What was your biggest challenge?
Honestly, working remotely. As a “people person,” the idea of not being in an office felt daunting. I remember seeing all the training sessions and meet-and-greets in those first two weeks and feeling completely overwhelmed.
But within a month, I saw the upside—flexibility, fewer distractions, and still being able to form strong relationships with my clients and colleagues. Learning how to track my time and navigate billable vs non-billable hours was another hurdle, but it’s all part of the consulting mindset.

What’s your day-to-day like?
No two days are ever the same! Since we’re full-service, I could be doing anything from employee relations and compliance reviews to benefits administration and performance coaching. It all depends on what each client needs.
I support a diverse group of nonprofit organizations, and I love that I can tailor my work to each of their missions. I feel like I get to make a real impact, every single day.

What opportunities are available to you?
There’s a path to becoming a Senior HR Consultant, and that’s certainly something I could pursue. But right now, I’m focused on deepening my relationships with clients and continuing to grow in this role. The variety of work and the chance to work with organizations doing meaningful things is rewarding in itself.

What is the support like?
The support is excellent. Shavon, my team lead, and my team have my back, always. I never feel like I’m alone on an island. There’s a real culture of collaboration and encouragement at Insource. We’re empowered to take initiative, find solutions, and share ideas—but there’s always someone there if we need a sounding board or a second opinion.

What are you most proud of?
My relationships with my clients. Many of them see me as a true thought partner, and that means the world to me. Some of the organizations I work with are doing such incredible work, and I feel genuinely proud to be associated with them. I talk about them even outside of work because I believe in what they’re doing.

What do you do for fun?
I love to ride my motorcycle and take trips when I can. I’m also a bit of a cigar aficionado. But most of all, I enjoy spending time with my family—I have two kids and being with them is always a priority.

Was Insource the right fit for you?
Absolutely.
Even though I’m technically a consultant, I feel like part of the team here and a valued employee. There’s a clear sense of belonging within the HR practice, and the culture really matches my values. It’s been a great fit.
